Laurel Park residents and neighbors, the forecast is calling for severe winter weather in the next few days, with ice accumulation up to three inches. This is, by all accounts, a very large storm that will leave a very wide path across Metro Atlanta and including Braselton. We could see power outages, closed roads, and snow days for area kids. Now is the time to take a few steps ahead of time to get your home ready for the plummeting temps and accumulating snow and ice.
Roads May Be Closed
If the ice and snow is thick enough, it will not only make the roads too slick for driving, it will also bring down tree limbs and power lines. Be ready to stay home for at least a few days.
- Stock up on bottled water and no-cook meals.
- Have plenty of paper goods and baby wipes on hand.
- Check and re-fill needed medications today.
Power Outages
Current predictions are that thousands in the metro area and surrounding suburbs could be without power for an extended time. There are a few important items to check off the list before the weather hits.
- Fill your car’s gas tank.
- Charge electronic devices and battery packs.
- Stock up on batteries.
- Locate flashlights, extra blankets, and safe space heaters.
- If you have one, test your generator ahead of the storm and buy fresh fuel.
- Check frequently with local authorities for all the latest news.
Avoid Frozen Pipes
When the temperatures fall below freezing for an extended time, the chances of a frozen pipe goes up dramatically. Take a few precautions to hopefully avoid this winter headache:
- Turn off the water to outside spigots, drain the lines, and place covers to insulate them.
- Set indoor faucets to a steady, light trickle to keep water flowing, especially at night.
- Open cabinet doors under sinks to allow warm air to circulate near the pipes.
- If you are lucky enough to catch a frozen pipe, turn off the water to avoid the ensuing flood when it thaws.
Enjoy the Winter Wonderland
Once you’ve taken all the precautions and planned for the icy temps and snowy accumulation, it’s time to sit back in your lovely new home and enjoy the winter scenery outside. Have fun in the snow, and enjoy what will surely be a Southern snow event to remember!
